What is a “Bar Mleczny”?
What is a “Bar Mleczny” (Milk Bar)?
If you’re studying in Poland, you have to know this kind of places.
A bar mleczny (literally “milk bar”) is a traditional Polish cafeteria serving simple, homemade meals at very low prices. Despite the name, it’s not really about milk, the name comes from the post-war period, when meals based on dairy, flour, and vegetables were cheaper and more available.
They serve all the best and traditional Polish dishes such as:
dumplings (pierogi), soups (tomato, beetroot, żurek), pancakes with white cheese (naleśniki), potato pancakes, cabbage rolls (gołąbki), and chicken and pork chops accompanied with a glass of kompot (a fruit drink).
Simple, authentic, decent-sized.
How much does it cost? The dishes are super cheap, it’s also possible to take them home as take-away or ask for half a portion. Perfect for students on a budget.
Here’s a couple of milk bars worth visiting:
– Miła bar mleczny (Street Czysta)
– Bar mleczny “Bieńczyce” (Street Spytka z Melsztyna 22)
– Bar mleczny Smakosz (Street Mogilska 58)
