Kraków Nativity Scenes – not just on the Main Square!

Kraków’s famous nativity scenes (Szopki Krakowskie) are one of the city’s most unique and eye-catching traditions. They can be admired most of all at the post-competition exhibition at Krzysztofory Palace (Main Market Square 35), which takes place from December to February.

Some of the most beautiful, historical, and even moving nativity scenes can also be found in churches around the city, especially at the Bernardine Fathers’ Church on Bernardyńska Street and at the Capuchin Church on Loretańska Street.

But that’s not all. Nativity scenes in Kraków aren’t limited to official exhibitions or churches. Some of them are scattered around the city, placed individually in parks, near streets, or in quieter corners. One example is the nativity scene in Strzelecki Park near Lubicz Street, which you might come across during a casual walk.

What makes Kraków nativity scenes truly special is their form. They are made from many different materials and are usually richly, sometimes even extravagantly decorated. They don’t only depict traditional biblical figures like Baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Very often, you’ll find historical characters, local figures, modern people, and sometimes even unexpected or quirky details that feel surprising or a little strange.

Each szopka is different, and that’s part of the charm. Keep your eyes open while exploring Kraków… you might discover one where you least expect it ✨
